The
Imperial Newsagency is the oldest established newsagents in Gibraltar
having been founded in 1919, by a Mr Emanuel Smith. At that
time the shop was situated in Convent Place, just two doors north from
were it is now. In fact, the location has changed on a
number of occasions but always
within the same area. |

The business continued to flourish and became popularly known as 'Adamberrys' after the family name. At that time a large area of the shop was dedicated to office and storage space leaving a smaller area for the shop, since unlike the self-service evident in most shops nowadays, most items were served from behind the large counter. In the early seventies a small branch was opened next door which was entirely dedicated to books. In 1982 following the death of Mr Adamberry, and due to other family pressures, the business began to decline. In 1998, the lease was bought by the Ritchie family. After a short period of experimentation and a steep learning curve, it was decided to reduce the variety of articles the shop dealt with and concentrate on Newspapers, magazines, stationery, children's books and greeting cards. Additionally items showing Gibraltar's heritage and model soldiers representing units with a Gibraltar connection have become available. As a contrast and perhaps because of a sense of fun, you will also find on sale an excellent collection of cuddly and beanie type toys which have proved extremely popular. Also proving popular is the selection of greeting cards. Here you will be able to find a balanced combination of conservative cards for all occasions and a large range of modern cards with a great deal of flair and personality. The name of the shop, THE IMPERIAL NEWSAGENCY, may spring from the past but the intention is to build on this. One project, which is now close to fruition, is the renovation of a 1950's Morris 'J type' van, which will be used in connection with the business. This van previously served another well established local firm and it is hoped that her original number plate G13411, will soon be gracing the streets of Gibraltar once again. Other plans are in hand which we hope will bring the shop back to its former glory, but none will be more important than the personal service of our dedicated staff, who are always ready to offer you the very best service, and always with a smile.
